My name is Amanda and I am a ceramic artist in coastal Alabama.

A little about me:

I express myself through pottery, sculpture, photography, and sewing among other things. I want to be outside among birds as much as possible. I have a companion bird names Sugar who just turned 17. She loves to watch me throw on the wheel. When I’m not making art, I’m studying, drinking cheap wine or stargazing. My fascination with death keeps me balanced.
Where it all began:

I grew up walking the nature trails of coastal Alabama. I spent much of my time outside in nature or down by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. I always wanted to study animals, especially birds, so I began pursuing my degree in biology in 2014. Along the way I discovered pottery and never wanted to stop working with clay. I have been making ceramics for six years, but Bird of Clay Ceramics officially began in 2019 with the release of my first cohesive collection which features animal skulls.
Where the magick happens:

All of my artwork is made in a small studio space that was transformed from a garage. I have a wheel, an old kiln, and a wonderful avian studio assistant (my beautiful bird).

Each piece in my signature Afterlife collection features an animal skull. The body of each piece is wheel thrown. The skulls are freehand carved to resemble the likeness of a real animal skull.

Are you daydreaming about the mountains? I do every time I make a piece for this series.
Each of these mugs has a day scene on one side and a night scene on the other. Each mug body  is wheel thrown and is finished with a hand pulled handle. They are hand painted with underglazes and are finished with a clear glaze that feels smooth to the touch. They are perfect for right and left handed hot drink enthusiasts.

Wheel throwing lessons

I am opening a limited number of slots for private wheel throwing lessons. I can only do them locally (I am located in mobile Alabama). I am very exited to teach others this beautiful artform. Please get in touch below for more information.
